Repointing & Rebedding

Roof Repointing and Rebedding

The ridge caps along the top and hips of a tiled roof sit on a bed of mortar and are sealed with pointing. Mortar is rigid and the roof is not, so over time the bedding cracks, the pointing crumbles, and the caps start to move. Once that happens, water gets under them.

Rebedding and repointing are two different jobs that usually happen together. Rebedding means lifting the caps and laying them on fresh mortar. Repointing means sealing the join with a flexible pointing compound that flexes with the roof instead of cracking like traditional mortar does.

  • Rebedding ridge and hip capsCaps lifted, old mortar removed, and the caps re-laid on a fresh bed.
  • Flexible pointingA flexible compound applied over the bedding so the seal moves with the roof.
  • Colour matched finishPointing available in a range of colours to suit the roof.
  • Done as part of a restorationRebedding and repointing are standard steps in a full restoration, and can also be done on their own.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my roof needs repointing?

Look along the ridge line from the ground. Crumbling mortar, visible gaps, and caps that sit unevenly are the usual signs.

What is the difference between bedding and pointing?

Bedding is the mortar the ridge cap sits on. Pointing is the sealing layer over the top of it.

Why flexible pointing instead of cement?

Cement is rigid and cracks as the roof moves and heats. Flexible pointing compound is designed to move with it.
